There is just not enough time to study every alternative nor is their always enough knowledge of network products and solutions among IT staff to make the kind of informed decisions we would like to make. Sometimes, because of limited resources and time, we are forced to let what E-Rate will fund or what a vendor says is the right solution become our choice. Thinking strategically, focusing on end user needs rather than vendor's products and using the knowledge and experience of vendor-neutral network and systems engineers can release the IT decision making pressure. In this case study we describe how JDL works with Chicago Public Schools to improve the processes used to evaluate, select, specify, bid and fund $200 million in e-rate initiatives. |
